KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) - A 75-year-old western Missouri man has died following a hit-and-run crash in Independence, police said.

The crash happened around 7:30 a.m. Monday when a minivan ran a red light on westbound U.S. 24 and hit a car that was passing through the intersection at South Sterling Avenue, police said. The driver of the car, Thomas Cooke of Independence, was rushed to a hospital, where he died, police said. A passenger in Cooke’s car remained hospitalized Tuesday morning.

Police said the driver and three passengers in the minivan jumped out of the vehicle and fled the scene on foot after the crash. They had not been identified by early Tuesday.

Witnesses told police that the minivan had been speeding when it hit the car.
