GARFIELD, N.J. (AP) - A fast-moving fire roared through a northern New Jersey apartment building early Thursday, displacing 10 residents and slightly injuring two police officers.
The fire in the three-story building in Garfield was reported around 1:30 a.m., authorities said. The building was already engulfed in flames when emergency responders arrived minutes later, but police officers were able to enter the building and help evacuate all the residents.
Two officers were treated for smoke inhalation, authorities said. Another person was taken to a hospital for undisclosed reasons, but it wasn’t clear if that person was a resident or an emergency responder.
Firefighters from Garfield and three neighboring towns then battled the blaze before it was brought under control later Thursday morning. A nearby building was briefly evacuated as a precaution while crews battled the flames.
The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
