ROYALTON, Vt. (AP) - A non-fatal shooting at a Royalton home was in self-defense and no charges will be filed against the man who fired the shot, police said Tuesday, announcing the decision by the office of the Windsor County State’s Attorney.

An investigation found that the April 15 shooting occurred when Nicholas Schultz, who had been living at the home where the shooting took place, left with a firearm and returned shortly afterward while still carrying the weapon.

Police say Schultz failed to comply with commands from the homeowner, Jason Farina, to put down his weapon. Farina fired his own gun, hitting Schultz in the lower extremity. Schultz was briefly hospitalized for treatment of the wound.

The investigation determined the shooting was a justified use of force in self-defense.
