RENO, Nev. (AP) - Reno’s police chief is trying to find ways to expedite investigations into officer-involved shootings.
Chief Jason Soto says one of the complaints he has heard in the community is that it shouldn’t take up to two years to make details public after a police officer shoots someone.
The Reno Gazette Journal reports Soto made his comments during a panel discussion with police chiefs across the state organized by Attorney General Aaron Ford.
Soto also currently is serving as acting city manager of Reno. He didn’t offer any details other than to say the region is working on establishing a deadline for most investigations to be completed. He says there should be exceptions for extreme cases.
Calls for expedited investigations and the release of body camera footage in officers involved shootings have become more insistent amid the protests of George Floyd’s death at the hands of Minneapolis police officers.
