NEWARK, N.J. (AP) - A single-car crash in Newark claimed the lives of three people and critically injured two others, authorities said.
Essex County prosecutors said the car was heading west on Route 22 when it crashed and caught fire shortly after 11 p.m. Tuesday.
Taylor Hill, 19, and Kamal Johnson, 18, both of Newark, were pronounced dead at the scene, prosecutors said. Nashawn Brooks, 20, of Irvington was taken to University Hospital, where he was pronounced dead just before noon Wednesday, prosecutors said.
Two females, including the 19-year-old driver, were hospitalized in critical condition, prosecutors said.
Authorities said speed doesn’t appear to have been a factor in the crash, which remains under investigation.
Gov. Phil Murphy said at a press conference Wednesday that the victims were on their way back from Point Pleasant Beach, where over 1,000 people had gathered Tuesday night on the beach.
