PHILADELPHIA (AP) - A man who fired at officers trying to take him into custody Thursday, then barricaded himself in a building and was later killed in a shootout with police, authorities said.

No one else was hurt in the exchange of gunfire.

Pennsylvania state parole officers were trying to serve an arrest warrant on the man around 1 p.m. when he opened fire on them, police said. The officers returned fire, and the man retreated and took up a position on the second floor of the building, according to police.

Philadelphia police then exchanged fire with the gunman, who was hit. He was pronounced dead just before 3 p.m.

The man’s name wasn’t immediately released.

Area schools were placed on lockdown during the standoff.

Thursday’s shooting took place five months after a barricaded gunman shot and wounded six Philadelphia police officers in a standoff that lasted more than seven hours.
