KEY WEST, Fla. (AP) - More than 20 top contemporary writers are exploring literature’s relationship to sports during the 38th annual Key West Literary Seminar that began Thursday.

Themed “Reading Between the Lines: Sports and Literature,” the event has attracted nearly 400 registrants to attend readings, lectures and panel discussions by scheduled presenters including Buzz Bissinger, Pulitzer Prize–winning author of “Friday Night Lights”; Jane Leavy, known for her biographies of baseball greats including Babe Ruth; and Joyce Carol Oates, whose book “On Boxing” investigates the sport.

Scheduled presentations analyze the role sports can play in shaping social issues, effecting cultural change and inspiring personal growth. Topics include “The Olympic Games and Political Action,” “The Art of Losing” and “Biography and the Black Athlete.”



The seminar concludes Sunday afternoon with a free public program of readings and commentary by several featured presenters.
