PHILADELPHIA (AP) - A man with a gunshot wound arrested in north Philadelphia after an attack on an undercover police sergeant who had fired shots at her attacker has been cleared of involvement in that incident, authorities said.

The man remains in custody in an alleged break-in at a nearby home, and police are investigating the circumstances of the shooting that critically wounded him.

Police said earlier the 57-year-old officer was sitting in a parked car around 7:30 p.m. Tuesday when a man threw a rock into her driver’s side window, grabbed her by the neck and tried to drag her out of the car. The sergeant then pulled out her gun and started shooting, but police now say it’s unclear whether she hit the suspect.

The other man was found about 20 minutes later after the homeowner spotted him and chased him. He was hospitalized in critical condition. The sergeant - a 23-year veteran of the force - was treated for minor injuries. The attacker remains at large and is being sought, police said.
