ROY, Utah (AP) - One man died overnight and another is in custody after police say they became involved in a shootout that also injured a police dog.
KSL reports the incident began about 2 a.m. Saturday, according to a Roy City Police Department news release. A Roy City police officer stopped a vehicle for a traffic violation and had a brief discussion with the two occupants, both white men, before they fled, according to the release.
Officers pursued the vehicle “briefly” but then stopped chasine, the release says.
A short time later, officers learned the vehicle was stopped in a large field in Clinton, according to police. “As officers approached the vehicle, they were subjected to gunfire from one of the suspects,” police said. Officers returned fire.”
One of the men in the vehicle is dead and the other is in custody, police said. Police have identified the men but said their names and ages will not be released at this time.
A police dog named Mik was struck in the face by gunfire. He is being treated at an animal emergency room and is expected to survive, police said.
The officers involved in the shooting have been placed on administrative leave. The Weber County Attorney’s Office and Davis County Attorney’s Office have taken over the investigation.
