COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) - A South Carolina man who took his time to scratch off the numbers on a lottery ticket ended up winning $250,000, officials said.

The man purchased the $10 50X scratch-off game ticket at a gas station in Columbia, The State newspaper reported. The winner told lottery officials it was “a good thing” he waited until he got home to scratch off the numbers.

Lottery officials did not identify the Midlands area man because South Carolina, and seven other states, allow lottery winners to remain anonymous.

“I was very shocked,” the man told officials a few days after cashing in the ticket.

The man did not say what he would do with his winnings. He overcame odds of 1 in 810,000 to win the prize, according to the South Carolina Education Lottery.

El Cheapo, the convenience store that sold the ticket, received a $2,500 commission, officials said.
