LANCASTER, Pa. (AP) - A Pennsylvania funeral director whose license was suspended amid allegations of mishandling bodies and lying on death certificates is now facing criminal charges.
Andrew T. Scheid, 49, was charged Thursday with four felony counts of tampering with public records and four misdemeanor counts of abuse of a corpse. The state Attorney General’s office also announced it has filed a civil lawsuit aimed at permanently closing Scheid’s funeral homes and obtaining restitution for customers.
It wasn’t known Thursday if Scheid has retained an attorney. He operated funeral homes in Lancaster and in Manor Township, outside Millersville.
Scheid’s license was suspended earlier this year, shortly after four decomposing bodies were found at the funeral home in Manor.
None of the bodies had been refrigerated or embalmed, as required by law, and had been there for several days, authorities have said. They also claim Scheid falsified records about when remains were embalmed or cremated.
Scheid also used a $7,500 check to buy a burial vault last December, authorities said, despite knowing he didn’t have enough money to make the purchase.
