LAS VEGAS (AP) - Las Vegas police shot and killed a man they said was armed, wanted for questioning about several neighborhood fires and eluded an officer’s gunshot during a chase before taking a woman hostage, authorities said Monday.
The woman was not harmed, but police Capt. Nichole Splinter said the man was shot by SWAT officers who entered the mobile home after police created a distraction. Splinter said the man had a gun.
The name of the slain man and the officers involved in the shootings were not immediately made public.
Splinter said several other people got out of the mobile home before police arrived a little after the first shooting about 9:15 a.m. near the busy intersections of Nellis Boulevard and Gowan Road.
The police captain said the officer who fired one shot during the foot chase reported the man pointed a handgun at him as he fled.
Police said the fatal shooting happened a little before noon.
David Reeves, an employee at an auto lot where a palm tree had been set afire earlier, told the Las Vegas Review-Journal he saw the man running from police and believed he was the man who set that fire.
Splinter said several trees and cars were burned in the area.
