Voters approve ‘youth vote’ initiative

BRATTLEBORO, Vt. (AP) - Vermont voters have approved a new measure to allow anyone 16 or older to vote on town issues.

The Brattleboro Reformer reports the “Youth Vote” amendment passed in Brattleboro Tuesday 908-408.

The amendment would also allow teens to serve as Town Meeting members who vote at the annual Representative Town Meeting or school board members.

However, the school boards could dissolve in June under a forced merger of school districts.

The youth vote initiative was supported by Brattleboro Common Sense, which is a group that advocates election reform and other issues.

The measure now heads to the state Legislature for approval to amend Brattleboro’s town charter.
