PORTLAND, Maine (AP) - Officials at the second-largest public university in Maine say a new name would give the school a boost by helping attract more students.

The University of Southern Maine released details about the pending name change Wednesday. University President Glenn Cummings says Maine is looking at a demographic decline that is unfavorable to the college, and a name change could help lure out-of-state students.

Any change to USM’s name would need to be approved by the Board of Trustees, and there would also have to be approval from the state Legislature. That means the name change would not be soon, and could possibly take more than two years to come into effect.

The school has campuses in Portland and Gorham. University of Maine at Portland is one name on the table.
