Nationals third baseman Anthony Rendon was named the National League player of the week Monday after he went 14-for-29 (.483) with three doubles and two homers in seven games. He currently is riding a 12-game hit streak.
The pending free agent has set career highs of 29 homers and 104 RBI this season. His previous bests were 25 homers and 100 RBI two years ago.
Rendon is one homer and six runs shy of becoming the third player in Nationals history to reach 30 doubles, 30 homers, 100 RBI and 100 runs in one season. He had four hits Sunday as the Nationals beat the Cubs, sweeping the three-game series on the road.
The Nationals have won four in a row, six of the last seven and host the Baltimore Orioles (43-88) on Tuesday. The probable pitchers are Washington’s Patrick Corbin (10-5, 3.17) against the Orioles’ Aaron Brooks (3-7, 6.21).
Washington (73-57) leads the wild card race in the National League. The Nationals were off Monday and trailed the first-place Atlanta Braves by six games in the National League East. The Braves play at Colorado on Monday.
