CONCORD, N.H. (AP) - New Hampshire is getting federal money to improve how first responders treat people in a mental health crisis.

The state’s Democratic Congressional delegation says the Department of Health and Human Services is giving the New Hampshire chapter of the National Alliance on Mental Illness $119,000 for crisis intervention training.

Ken Norton, the alliance’s executive director, says the organization will partner with law enforcement, fire officials and emergency medical officials to both improve their response to those in crisis as well as promote mental wellness within their own ranks. He notes that first responders are themselves at higher risk for depression and suicide given their frequent exposure to traumatic situations.
