ASHEVILLE, N.C. (AP) - The University of North Carolina, Asheville has named a humanities lecture hall after four of the school’s first four black professors.

The Asheville Citizen-Times reports the school held a ceremony Friday to recognize the newly named Mullen & James Humanities Hall. The renaming ceremony took place during its fifth African-Americans in Western North Carolina and Southern Appalachia Conference.

Dolly Jenkins-Mullen and Dwight Mullen taught English, Charles James taught chemistry and Deborah “Dee” Grimes-James taught English. They came to the school in 1984, and were among its first African-American faculty members.

During their first decade at the school, the quartet created the African-American Colloquium to support first-year students. They recently retired.

Interdisciplinary, International, & Africana Studies Programs Director Agya Boakye-Boaten says they changed the course of UNCA’s “history in profound ways.”
