NEWPORT CITY, Vt. (AP) - A group of Vermont school boards plan to sue the state Board of Education to save small school grants.
The Caledonian-Record reports seven boards in the North Country Supervisory Union decided to move forward with legal action pending Act 46’s implementation. Districts fighting forced mergers are also a part of the planned suit.
NCSU Superintendent John Castle says using small school grants to aid mergers violates the Brigham court decision, which outlines equal school funding. Castle says the grants have an even bigger impact on rural schools that have already made cuts.
Castle adds that small school grants were meant to even the state’s funding formula.
