ALBANY, N.Y. (AP) - Two donated blue spruce trees are being cut down this week and transported to the Capitol and Empire State Plaza in Albany to become New York state’s holiday trees.

On Tuesday morning, a 35-foot spruce donated by the Pfeifer family will be cut down in Latham. A tree donated by the Pappas family will be cut down in Loudonville on Thursday.

Lights will be turned on at a celebration at the Empire State Plaza on Sunday, Dec. 2. The event will feature free skate rentals, horse and carriage rides, music by Tuba Christmas and figure skating performances. A special Rock and Skate will follow the tree-lighting and fireworks at 5:15.

The Empire State Plaza rink opens for skating this season on Friday, Nov. 30.
