MONTECITO, Calif. (AP) - Demolition plans for a storm-ravaged home in Montecito took a turn this month when Maureen and Chris Speer and their children came by for a last look.
The Speers’ daughter began playing the family’s mud-choked grand piano, inspiring contractor Ann Burgard.
Burgard tells KEYT-TV she talked with her workers about trying to save the piano and they decided to tear the house down around it.
The work left the piano standing, possibly to serve a new purpose.
Maureen Speer suggests it could be made into an artwork. Chris Speer says a friend with a large property suggesting bringing it over so he could plant petunias in it.
The Jan. 9 debris flows destroyed or damaged many Montecito homes and killed at least 21 people.
