WILLISTON, N.D. (AP) - Williston residents have voted against paying higher taxes to fund school construction projects to create more space.

The school district says preliminary results show that only 41 percent of the 2,200 voters in Tuesday’s election favored the proposed $77.2 million bond issue. Sixty percent approval was needed.

The bond issue would have paid for two elementary schools and an addition to Williston High School. It would have raised taxes about $215 per year for every $100,000 of taxable evaluation.

District officials say enrollment has nearly doubled in the past decade, to about 4,100 students in grades K-12.
