HOLLYWOOD, Fla. (AP) - A Florida city is removing a sailboat that washed ashore on its beach nearly two months ago.

The Miami Herald reported Thursday that the marooned boat found its resting place on May 1 after its owner, Chad Lisi, jumped ship when the engine died. Now the city of Hollywood is removing the boat only six days after gaining control over it.

State law allowed Lisi 45 days to remove the boat before the city could take over the removal. But Lisi says he couldn’t afford to tow the boat. Hollywood Police spokesman Officer Christian Lata says the company hired to remove the boat will likely destroy it. The removal was expected to be completed by Friday.
