MOUND BAYOU, Miss. (AP) - A high school will close in a historic Mississippi Delta town.
The North Bolivar school board voted 3-2 Monday to close John F. Kennedy High School in Mound Bayou after this year, sending high school students to Broad Street High School in Shelby.
Kindergarten through sixth grade students would shift from Shelby to a Mound Bayou elementary school. The Mound Bayou high school would become a career center.
The Bolivar Commercial reports Superintendent Maurice Smith told Mound Bayou residents that the district faces a deficit and declining enrollment. He says schools need expensive renovations.
Legislators merged Mound Bayou and North Bolivar school districts in 2014.
Smith, formerly Mound Bayou superintendent, says he wants to rename merged schools.
Mound Bayou is notable as a town founded for African Americans during segregation.
