One week into the college baseball season, Andy Cannizaro, the head coach at Mississippi State University, resigned Tuesday after reports of his pending firing came out Monday night.
Cannizaro was beginning his second season as the Bulldogs coach.
“I had a wonderful opportunity at Mississippi State, but unfortunately I made some poor decisions,” Cannizaro said in a statement. “I hope Mississippi State University and all of the fans and people affected will one day forgive me.”
Before Tuesday’s announcement, rumors on Twitter and message boards indicated the coach, 39, had an improper relationship with a student.
It’s not yet determined what Cannizaro did, but reports Monday indicated he would be fired “with cause,” not relating to the team’s performance on the field, which could allude to the “poor decisions” Cannizaro mentioned in his statement.
Mississippi State reached an NCAA Super Regional last postseason, in Cannizaro’s first year. The Bulldogs started the 2018 season 0-3.
Pitching coach Gary Henderson has assumed Cannizaro’s duties for the remainder of the season.
