MASTIC, N.Y. (AP) - A Long Island county has agreed to pay $1.5 million to settle a lawsuit over the death of a 17-year-old girl who was killed in a car crash involving two police officers nearly a decade ago.
In 2008, Teaisha Scales was a passenger in a car driven by her boyfriend, when the car crashed into a utility pole in Mastic. Newsday reports the driver of the car, 22-year-old Michael Peacock, said he lost control after a police cruiser pursuing him hit the rear of his sedan.
The officers said they were not engaged in a pursuit, and said in a deposition they came upon the crash after it occurred. Scales died six days after the crash.
The officers and Suffolk County did not admit liability in the settlement.
