STOCKTON, N.J. (AP) - New Jersey’s oldest and smallest elementary school is about to open its doors for its final year of operation.
Classes start Tuesday at the Stockton Borough Elementary School, which opened in 1832. The current school building dates back to 1872.
Officials cited declining enrollment for shuttering the school in the small Hunterdon County town, which in most years it has housed fewer than 50 students. Stockton is part of the South Hunterdon Regional School District, which also serves Lambertville and West Amwell.
District officials agreed late last year to keep the Stockton school open for one more year after community members started a grass roots campaign to save the facility.
School officials plan to hold a community celebration in June to honor the school and its rich heritage.
