CONCORD, N.H. (AP) - A New Hampshire legislative committee has voted to relax qualifications for school nurses.
WMUR-TV reports (https://bit.ly/2yf1pbC) the Joint Legislative Committee on Administrative Rules on Thursday voted to allow school districts to work around a state law that requires school nurses to have a bachelor’s degree and three years of pediatrics experience.
Committee members were told that the many qualified nurses are opting to work at hospitals over schools, where they can earn a higher salary.
The committee voted to allow nurses with associates degrees to staff school nurse positions. They will have to get a bachelor’s or master’s degree within six years, however.
The new standards take effect immediately; the plan is to officially change the law in January.
