NEWCOMB, N.Y. (AP) - State police say the body of a 28-year-old New Jersey man has been found in the Adirondack High Peaks after more than a week of searching by dozens of forest rangers and volunteers.

Alex Stevens, of Hopewell, was last seen by other hikers Sept. 2 at the base of Wallface Mountain, about 10 miles (16 kilometers) south of Lake Placid. A search began on Sept. 10 after his family reported he hadn’t returned from a backpacking trip.

His campsite was later found at the top of Wallface, a steep mountain in one of the most rugged areas of the Adirondacks.

Police say Stevens was found dead Monday morning near Wallface Pond. An autopsy was to be completed on Tuesday.
