PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) - Oregon’s largest school district has a permanent superintendent for the first time in more than a year.
Guadalupe Guerrero began work Monday, looking to bolster a district that has been plagued by controversy. He comes to Portland from San Francisco, where he was that district’s deputy superintendent of instruction, innovation and social justice.
The Oregonian/OregonLive reports (https://is.gd/KXnQ2c ) Guerrero spent part of his first morning at Cesar Chavez K-8 school, a North Portland school that has seen heavy turnover in its leadership and faculty in recent years. It was abruptly given a new principal last week.
Former Superintendent Carole Smith stepped down in July 2016 following a controversy over lead in the water.
