EXETER, R.I. (AP) - A section of Interstate 95 northbound in Rhode Island that had been closed for bridge work has reopened ahead of schedule.
The portion of the highway starting at Exit 4 in Exeter that was closed Friday evening was opened just before 9 a.m. Sunday, about 20 hours early.
The work was initially scheduled to continue until 5 a.m. Monday. Traffic had been diverted onto Route 3.
Rhode Island Department of Transportation spokesman Charles St. Martin told The Providence Journal the work went smoothly.
He said were no equipment breakdowns and the weather cooperated. Even a few hours of rain on Saturday helped to keep dust to a minimum.
The department has said the rapid bridge replacement method will save nearly $1 million and four months of delays.
