SALT LAKE CITY (AP) - A 26-year-old Utah man has taken a plea deal to end a criminal case stemming from the fatal shooting of a man who tried to rob him at gunpoint in August 2016.
The Deseret News reports that Daniel Christopher Simon pleaded guilty to a misdemeanor weapon offense that had been reduced from a felony, and was given credit for time already served in the slaying of Jesse Ray Rakes.
Simon had a prior felony conviction and is prohibited from having a gun.
Police say he was with his girlfriend when Rakes and two other men demanded their car and their property.
The woman handed Simon a gun, and police say Simon shot Rakes as Rakes pulled out his own gun.
The other two men crashed a vehicle trying to ram Simon’s car. They were arrested and found guilty of felony charges.
