ELKHART, Ind. (AP) - A northern Indiana man who went missing in action during the Korean War is finally getting a memorial service thanks to his sister’s dying wish.
Cpl. Clyde R. Clifford was declared dead by the U.S. military in December 1953, more than three years after the 20-year-old Elkhart man was reported missing in action.
But The Elkhart Truth reports that his mother never arranged a funeral service for him because she held out hope until her death that he would someday return home.
Clifford’s sister, Nancy Lanthier, died in March before fulfilling her plans for a service honoring her brother’s life and service.
But thanks to a dying request she made to her hospice caregiver, Clifford will be honored Saturday with full military honors at Chapel Hill Memorial Gardens in Osceola.
