Man pleads guilty in non-fatal shooting of police officer

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. (AP) - A Raleigh man charged in connection with the non-fatal shooting of a Winston-Salem police officer has pleaded guilty.

The Winston-Salem Journal reports (https://bit.ly/2q6dXBU) 27-year-old Gary Giovon Lynn pleaded Thursday to assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill, inflicting serious injury, possession of a firearm by a felon and fleeing to elude arrest in the January 2016 shooting of Officer Nick Powell.

Powell was shot in the chest, forearm, arm and armpit after providing backup during a traffic stop.

Defense attorney Paul James says Lynn suffers from ADHD and was recently diagnosed with other mental-health issues. He was sentenced to eight years and eight months to 11 years and five months in prison, in addition to a 10-year sentence for a firearms charge stemming from the same incident.
