READING, Mass. (AP) - A Massachusetts man who had just arrived at a Memorial Day cookout didn’t hesitate when he saw a car crash into a utility pole and burst into flames, trapping a woman inside.

Brandon Finnen rushed to the burning car in Reading at about 2 p.m. Sunday, wrapped his fist in his sweatshirt and started punching the window. When that failed, he grabbed a baseball bat and broke the window, before he and another man dragged the woman clear.

The 25-year-old Finnen, of Salem, tells WFXT-TV his adrenaline was “definitely pumping,” but he doesn’t think he’s a hero.

He tells the Boston Herald the woman was a stranger, but in the heat of the moment, she felt like family.

Police say a medical episode likely caused the woman to crash. She was hospitalized.
