HEARNE, Texas (AP) - The state education commissioner has reversed an earlier decision and will allow the school board of a rural Texas school district to remain in place despite concerns over violations of state rules.

Commissioner Mike Morath says in a letter dated Wednesday that further review of school documents and other material led him to keep in place the board for the Hearne school district.

Morath noted, however, that the Texas Education Agency still plans to lower the district’s accreditation and to appoint a manager to help oversee the district, which is northwest of College Station.

Morath said in a letter to the district in April that Superintendent Adrain Johnson and board members were failing to work together.

He also said board members operated a business office that lacked internal controls.
