HIGH ISLAND, Texas (AP) - A Galveston-area educator has been put on administrative leave with pay after she left her loaded gun in a school district vehicle and the weapon was found by a student athlete.
High Island Independent School District trustees on Friday night put Superintendent D’Ann Vonderau on leave amid the investigation.
Vonderau says she has a concealed handgun license. She says on May 1 she left the gun in a district SUV after traveling to another school district for a meeting, then later forgot to retrieve the weapon.
The gun was discovered by a student athlete as the High Island baseball team used the SUV to travel to a competition. Nobody was hurt.
Vonderau, in a statement , apologized for her actions.
Board members didn’t immediately decide the length of the superintendent’s leave.
