PHILADELPHIA (AP) - Philadelphia police say an officer fatally shot a dog that bit him while the officer was at a home placing two children into the care of welfare workers.

Capt. Jamil Taylor tells WPVI-TV (https://6abc.cm/2lHkOQz ) the incident occurred about 6:30 p.m. Wednesday at a home in southwest Philadelphia.

Police were called to assist Department of Human Services workers who had gone to the home to get the children whose mother was temporarily staying at the residence.

The homeowner put the dog in the basement, but the German shepherd escaped and bit the officer in the leg, prompting the officer to shoot it.

The officer was taken to Penn Presbyterian hospital. The children sought are in protective custody.
