VENTURA, Calif. (AP) - A former champion wrestler in southern California has died after a crash on Interstate 5.
The Ventura County Star reports (https://bit.ly/2lYVnpS ) that former Camarillo High wrestler Matt Hickman died Sunday while returning home from the California Interscholastic Federation State Wrestling Championship in Bakersfield.
California Highway Patrol says 25-year-old Hickman was involved in a single-car crash while driving south on Interstate 5 near Pyramid Lake. Officers believe Hickman then got out of his car and tried to run across lanes on the northbound side of the highway when he was struck by a car. He was pronounced dead on the scene.
Hickman was a two-time CIF champion in two different weight classes and a four-time Masters qualifier, winning one title.
