MARGARITAVILLE KING JIMMY BUFFET LAUNCHES RETIREMENT VILLAGE
Latitude Margaritaville - named after Buffet’s best-known song, “Margaritaville - will open its first community in Daytona Beach for “those looking to live the Margaritaville lifestyle as they grow older, but not up,” according to a press release. Current plans call for walkable neighborhoods, a fitness center and food and drinks from Buffett’s Margaritaville restaurant.
FORMER EXECUTIVE OF FAILED KEYS RESORT GUILTY IN $300M SCAM
A U.S. Attorney’s Office statement says a jury found 60-year-old David Schwarz guilty Friday of conspiracy to commit bank fraud, bank fraud and interference with the administration of the IRS. Sentencing is May 1. Schwarz was once chief financial officer and one-third owner of the Cay Clubs Resorts and Marinas. Prosecutors say 1,400 investors who purchased units in Cay Clubs developments were defrauded.
FLORIDA’S WINNINGEST HIGH SCHOOL FOOTBALL COACH STEPS DOWN
Corky Rogers says he doesn’t have the energy to continue in a head coaching capacity. Rogers has won 10 state titles with the Bulldogs over 28 seasons and has compiled a 465-84-1 record in 45 years. Rogers’ longtime assistant coach, Wayne Belger, will take over as interim head coach.
PETA BUYS STOCK IN MIAMI SEAQUARIUM’S PARENT COMPANY
PETA called on Madrid-based Parques Reunidos to release Lolita and four orcas at the company’s Marineland in France. Lolita has lived at Miami Seaquarium since 1970. PETA spokesman David Perle said the group’s single share is enough to participate in Parques Reunidos’ annual meeting and influence management decisions.
CITING CLASH FLORIDA JOBS AGENCY CHIEF ABRUPTLY RESIGNS
Chris Hart, a former legislator, abruptly resigned on Monday. He cited an ongoing conflict with Gov. Rick Scott over the future of Enterprise Florida, the outfit responsible for recruiting companies to the state. His resignation was first reported by Politico Florida. Hart took over as Enterprise Florida CEO on Jan. 3. He succeeded Bill Johnson, who was forced out after clashing with legislators.
