SOMERSWORTH, N.H. (AP) - A former Somersworth deputy tax collector has been indicted by a grand jury on theft charges accusing her of stealing more than $18,000 from car registrations and tax payments.

Seacoastonline.com reports (https://bit.ly/2mpwerL) that 49-year-old Cheryl Purpura was arrested on Jan. 9.

The indictment says that from August 2014 to March 2016, she would enter a lower amount in the accounting system collected from motor vehicle registration rates and keep the balance.

It was not immediately known if Purpura was being represented by an attorney.
