SPARKS, Nev. (AP) - The longest serving fire chief in the history of Sparks has died.

Sparks Mayor Geno Martini says Francis William “Bill” Farr died on Saturday. He was 93.

Farr served as Sparks’ fire chief from 1951-1976. The World War II veteran also was a state senator and a Washoe County commissioner.

Martini says he was the epitome of a public servant.

Current Sparks Fire Chief Chris Maples says he only had the pleasure of meeting Farr a few times, but that the stories he told at the fire station around the dinner table were legendary. He says his commitment to the public never wavered.
