LYNN, Mass. (AP) - Democratic state Sen. Thomas McGee wants to run for mayor of Lynn in November.

McGee tells The Item of Lynn (https://bit.ly/2nYIhwQ ) he’s looking forward to building a vision for the North Shore city of about 90,000 residents. The veteran lawmaker has taken out papers to run.

Republican Mayor Judith Flanagan Kennedy is completing her second four-year term as mayor and has not formally declared whether she plans to seek re-election in the fall.

McGee has served in the state Senate since 2002 and is co-chair of the Legislature’s Transportation Committee. He also recently served a three-year term as the Democratic State Committee chairman.

The senator’s father, also named Thomas McGee, served as speaker of the Massachusetts House of Representatives from 1975 to 1984. The elder McGee died in 2012.
