LOS ANGELES (AP) - Authorities say a male suspect fatally shot by Los Angeles police over the weekend was a 35-year-old resident of the city.

Police officials say the shooting early Saturday east of downtown occurred as the suspect was running from an area where patrol officers had heard gunfire.

Officer Jenny Houser says the officers opened fire as they tried to stop the man. A gun was recovered. Police did not release additional information about what immediately preceded the shooting.

The coroner’s office said Monday that 35-year-old Fred Barragan was pronounced dead at the scene.

The shooting forced the closure of a Metro light rail station in the Boyle Heights neighborhood. No officers were hurt.
