Maine’s sugar shacks are ready to open to the public this weekend for the annual sugary celebration.

Participating sugarhouses are opening their doors for Maine Maple Sunday, demonstrating how syrup is made and letting visitors sample freshly made maple syrup and candy.

This is prime season for sugarhouses, and more than 1 million trees are tapped in Maine.

Maine has the third largest syrup industry in this country, producing 545,000 gallons worth last year with a value of $17.4 million.

Gov. Paul LePage said the industry’s output has more than doubled since 2010, creating jobs, business opportunities and a highly valued product.
