ALBANY, N.Y. (AP) - A World War I soldier from Albany who was awarded the Medal of Honor is being honored in his hometown.
Albany officials on Monday will celebrate Henry Johnson Day with a ceremony at his statue in a city park.
Johnson suffered serious wounds while fighting off Germans and rescuing a comrade in France in 1918. Johnson, who was black, was awarded the Medal of Honor in 2015, decades after his death in 1929.
City officials will unveil a cast Medal of Honor on the Johnson statue. They also will present the first Henry Johnson Award for Distinguished Community Service.
