NEW YORK (AP) - About 200 firefighters battled a 5-alarm fire at a Greenwich Village apartment building.

Several firefighters suffered minor injuries in the blaze, which began just before 6 p.m. Wednesday and quickly spread to the roof of the six-story building on East 9th Street.

Crowds of onlookers gathered as heavy smoke billowed from the brick building.

The fire was brought under control about three hours later.

Officials did not say what caused the fire.
