NEW ORLEANS (AP) - A Southeastern Louisiana University student has been fatally shot after his mother says, despite her asking him to stay inside, he left home in a New Orleans suburb to check on his Hammond apartment during Tropical Storm Cindy’s rough weather.
NOLA.com/The Times-Picayune reports the Jefferson Parish Sheriff’s Office says 19-year-old Juawane Gray was killed early Wednesday during a double shooting in Marrero. Authorities say a 30-year-old man also injured in the shooting is expected to recover. Detectives know no motives or suspects.
Gray’s mother Dwan Gettridge says she last saw him Tuesday around 11 p.m. The family learned of Gray’s death Thursday morning when his aunt, Joviane Franklin, contacted the Jefferson Parish coroner’s office as a precaution.
The Archbishop Shaw High School student-athlete went to Southeastern for drafting and design.
