WARWICK, R.I. (AP) - A Rhode Island police officer has shot and killed two pit bulls that attacked a man walking his dog.

Warwick police say Officer John Zaborski happened to be nearby when the pit bulls jumped a fence and attacked Robert Joyal, who was walking his dog down the street on Tuesday.

Paul Taylor, who says he saw the attack, told WJAR-TV the officer tried unsuccessfully to pull the dogs away before he shot them.

Joyal was taken to a hospital with minor injuries. His dog was taken to a veterinarian.

Police continue to investigate.
