PADUCAH, Ky. (AP) - Design plans for a new memorial honoring the victims of a 1997 school shooting in Kentucky have been unveiled.

The Paducah Sun reports that organizers are seeking public donations for the memorial commemorating the shooting at Heath High School that left three students dead and others injured.

Plans to develop a new memorial began earlier this year when community members lobbied the McCracken County School Board to approve relocating pieces of an existing memorial at Heath Middle School to a more accessible site. Organizers said the current memorial needs major repairs, and existing components will be integrated into the new site.

School Board Vice Chairman Steve Shelby says the district has earmarked $20,000 for the project and will contribute land and electricity. The memorial is estimated to cost $70,000.
