WHITINGHAM, Vt. (AP) - Vermont firefighters have saved a horse and stopped the spread of an early morning barn fire, but were not able to save the three-story barn from being completely destroyed.

Whitingham Fire Chief Stan Janovsky says the fire on Sunday had many neighboring fire departments respond, with just enough water to extinguish the flames. The Brattleboro Reformer reports (https://bit.ly/2sGn8cI ) firefighters saved a horse from the barn, but 10 chickens died in the fire.

Owner Lyman Tefft says he’s unsure how the fire started since there’s no dry hay or electricity in the barn. His wife Rosemary Tefft says she’s thankful, as the fire could have been a lot worse.

The homeowners have set up a GoFundMe page to fundraise for fire recovery.
